Mai‘a hāpai is a variety of banana, in Hawai'ian meaning “pregnant banana,” which bears fruit out of the top of the stem. Sometimes the developing bunch is not able to push out into the open and the fruit forms within the stem. Harvesting the bananas then requires a kind of operation, to access the bunch stalk coiled to fit within the stem.
